Gridfinity - The Hat Box - A storage container for your aperiodic monotiles
thingiverse
I grabbed the hat monotile from here: https://github.com/christianp/aperiodic-monotile - This is the source that the authors of the paper about the hat monotile (as discovered by David Smith) themselves reference. See: https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/~csk/hat/If you print the STL from there without modifications, you'll end up with a tile that is 4mm high (or thick) and 30mm at it's widest point... At least I think I measured that right?Anyway, I went a bit overboard and ended up with over 50 of those things (83 and counting). All in 2 colors (doing a live/hot filament swap) as you can see from the photos, but that's besides the point. - The joke of course, is that it's a MONO tile... In MULTI color. I needed a storage system better than the zip-loc baggy I am using. Hence was born The Hat Box.It started out not being #gridfinity, but then my daughter said I should make it modular... And what better way... No #gridfinity is the ONLY WAY!The original (I kept the STL here for ya) fits about 10 or 11. I say 10 or 11 because, while I designed it for 11 (don't ask), if you end up putting 11 in the box, the tiles are a bit fiddly to get out. The tolerances are fine, it's just fiddly because there isn't a lot of room to grab a single tile... This is something that is solved with the #gridfinity versions. It has a handy cut-out. It also shows you on the outside of the container in which orientation the hats go.The 1X stores 9 tiles comfortably and the 2X stores 19 - MORE THAN DOUBLE!! if you have used Zack's system previously, you are probably wondering how high these are... As a kite, I would say. But in #gridfinity units it's 3.5U - Have a look at https://gridfinity.xyz/ You should really check out the hat monotile, it's pretty awesome! Look at the included photos why!
