Gridfinity Template (modified for mid-air holes)

This is the Gridfinity template by Zack Freedman, with a small modification to allow printing the holes in mid-air without supports.

If you don't know what Gridfinity is, check out Zack's original video, his original designs on thangs and this unofficial specification.

The original design had small holes, which would normally print mid-air and cause a little mess.

The usual solutions are:

Change slicer settings to print external perimeters first

Plug the small hole with a single layer, so it can still be punched open

Plug the entire hole, who uses it anyway?

Print with supports

Out of all the options above, the single layer solution is probably my favourite. However, the template included here adds another solution, which allows printing the holes mid-air without any changes to settings.

The technique is described in Greg's 3D Maker Cheatsheet, and I recommend you read it for more details.

Included is a sample model, which you can print to see how it works in real life.

The most important file here is the Fusion360 archive, which you can use as a template for creating gridfinity compatible modules.

Mid-Air holes by other people

There are other gridfinity based solutions that also incoroporate this same technique.

Gridfinity Base Template with Improved Holes (And Weight Slots - if you want them)
This design includes a base model that can be inserted into existing Gridfinity models

Gridfinity Rebuilt in OpenSCAD
This OpenSCAD implementation of the Gridfinity standard, also including support for mid-air holes
