Due to widespread availability and relatively low ammo costs of VOG-17 during the First and Second Chechen Wars, they became a popular choice among illegal armed groups. VOG-17s were often used as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), earning them an ironic nickname from Russian military: 'hattabka' (or 'hattabchik'). The nickname was inspired by well-known field commander Khattab. VOG-17 grenades were also used to make hand grenades and anti-personnel mines. Terrorists have employed IEDs based on VOG-17 for mining premises during the terrorist attacks in Dubrovka and Beslan.
