Green men and oak-leaf boss C13th*
sketchfab
One of a series of five intricately carved bosses at the intersections of Rochester Cathedral's South Nave Transept, where three bays meet in a stunning display of craftsmanship. The boss at issue showcases four robust green men amidst an exuberant profusion of oak-leaf foliation. Dating back to around 1340, according to McAleer (1996), the style of these bosses is unmistakably characteristic of that era. However, Alexander's research suggests a slightly earlier completion date for the vaulting, placing it shortly after the 1240 finish of the transept's construction. A thorough restoration in 1875 by Sir George Gilbert Scott likely involved repainting and gilding these very bosses, as seen in DRc/Emf/65/3. Currently, only a photograph from clerestory-level is available, sans scale.
