Automotive paint is utilized on cars to provide protection and enhance their aesthetic appeal. Currently, water-based acrylic polyurethane enamel paint dominates the market due to its ability to minimize environmental impact. The painting process involves applying several layers of paint with a total thickness of approximately 100 µm(0.1mm). Prior to paint application, thorough preparation and primer steps are necessary for successful coating. A basecoat is applied following primer, while a clearcoat layer can be added for a glossy and transparent finish that resists UV light exposure. In the past, manual paint application resulted in prolonged drying times due to solvent-based single-component paints. However, as car mass production increased, oven-baked two-component (catalyzed) paint replaced traditional methods. Now, robots apply these specialized paints, curing them in just a few hours at room temperature or within heated booths. Due to environmental concerns, heavy metals like lead and chromium have been phased out from automotive paint formulations since several decades ago. This has led to widespread adoption of water-based acrylic polyurethane enamels. Moreover, around 85% of lacquer paint can evaporate into the air, contributing significantly to pollution. As a result, water-based acrylic polyurethane enamels now account for almost universal usage as basecoats with clearcoats. For successful painting processes, proper pretreatment is vital, particularly high-pressure water spray jets directed at the body. Failure to prepare surfaces can result in premature finish system failure. Applying phosphate coats protects bodies from corrosion and prepares them for electrocoat operations. Electro-Coat Paint Operation (ELPO) utilizes approximately 99.9% of its paint, resulting in an eco-friendly process with superior salt spray resistance compared to other painting processes. In this process, a high voltage is applied as the body works as a cathode while the paint functions as an anode, sticking firmly to the surface. Primers serve multiple purposes and are typically the first coat applied: • It acts as a leveler by filling in marks on surfaces, creating a smoother finish. • It provides protection against corrosion caused by external factors such as heat differences, bumps, stone-chips, and UV-light exposure. • By applying primers, it becomes easier for paint to stick onto the surface. Primers also enhance a variety of colors which can be used by utilizing the coating. The final product interface is achieved with clearcoat. Since clearcoats work as protective barrier between external environmental elements and the metal surface of automobiles.
