Greek temples were magnificent structures built to enshrine revered deity statues within sacred sanctuaries of ancient Greek paganism. These impressive temples themselves generally did not directly serve a cult purpose, since elaborate sacrifices and rituals dedicated to the respective deity took place outside their walls. Temples were frequently utilized to store treasured votive offerings, showcasing the profound reverence of the people for their deities. They are the most significant and widespread building type in Greek architecture, demonstrating the ingenuity and artistic prowess of ancient Greek builders.
