The park was first designated Great Sand Dunes National Monument by President Herbert Hoover on March 17, 1932. Initially, it protected an area of 35,528 acres. Later, boundary changes and redesignation as a national park and preserve were authorized on November 22, 2000, and officially established through Congressional action on September 24, 2004. The park now encompasses 107,342 acres, while the preserve safeguards an additional 41,686 acres for a total of 149,028 acres.
