Welcome to Tunisia! We're thrilled to add one of Islam's most iconic monuments and Africa's greatest treasures to our ever-growing collection. Architectural and historical gems like this are relatively unknown in the West, so we want to share it with everyone. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Kairouan, Tunisia. Founded by Arab General Uqba ibn Nafi in 670 AD at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque sprawls over an area of more than 9,000 square meters (97,000 sq ft). It's one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world and a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb. Its perimeter, about 405 meters (1,329 ft) long, contains a prayer hall, a marble-paved courtyard, and a square minaret. In addition to its spiritual prestige, it's one of the masterpieces of Islamic architecture, notable for being the first to use the horseshoe arch. At its peak between the ninth and eleventh centuries AD, Kairouan was one of the greatest centers of Islamic civilization, with its reputation as a hotbed of scholarship covering the entire Maghreb. During this period, the Great Mosque of Kairouan served both as a place of prayer and a center for teaching Islamic sciences under the Maliki current. Its role is comparable to that of the University of Paris during the Middle Ages. Our version showcases the interior and how the prayer hall is composed of arches and columns. The real one isn't literally like our model, though! MiniWorld 3D is happy to bring these models to life and put a smile on the faces of people in Tunisia and Northern Africa. MiniWorld 3D is a collection of 3D printable landmarks and models from around the world! All our models are made from scratch by hand and brain - please give credit to all authors.
