Great Mosque - Kilwa Kisiwani

For hundreds of years, Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara, located on two islands off the coast of modern day Tanzania linked Africa to the wider Islamic world. Once described by a 14th century AD traveller as ‘one of the most beautiful cities, and elegantly built’, its historical significance cannot be understated. The Great Mosque at Kilwa was likely founded in the tenth century, the mosque was enlarged in the 11-12th centuries with a prayer hall and in the 14th century with additions in the southern part of the mosque.
