For centuries, Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara on two islands off modern Tanzania's coast have served as Africa's gateway to the broader Islamic world. A 14th-century traveler once hailed this town as 'one of the most beautiful cities, elegantly built', underscoring its pivotal historical importance. The Great Mosque at Kilwa is believed to date back to the tenth century; it was enlarged in the eleventh-twelfth centuries with a prayer hall and further expanded in the fourteenth century with new additions in the southern section of the mosque.
