Knights in medieval Europe donned a distinctive helmet known as the great helm or heaume, also referred to as the pot helm, bucket helm, or barrel helm, which emerged in the late twelfth century amidst the Crusades and remained in service until the fourteenth century. This barreled style of helmet became a staple among knights in most European armies from approximately 1220 to 1350 AD, eventually evolving into the frog-mouth helm specifically designed for jousting competitions.
