Gravestone of Hekataios

The epitaph reads: "Fare thee well, Hekataios; who lies beneath? A stranger finds his son, Hekataios, namesake of his father, still in youthful ephebe attire, with wisdom shining bright in his heart and the thrill of victory in every contest. His beautiful striving for excellence was cut short at eighteen years old. What a cruel fate it is to be subject to Moira's merciless hand! In ancient Greek mythology, the Moirai, known as the Fates in English, were powerful deities who controlled the thread of life for every mortal from birth to death. Comprising three sisters: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos, they held sway over destiny, directing the course of fate with unyielding authority. Their will was law, and gods and men alike had to bow to their power."
