This sculpture vividly captures a poignant scene of people mourning the loss of a cherished loved one. The deceased appears to have transcended mortality, transformed into an angelic form. A cluster of books at the lower right corner adds depth to the narrative, symbolizing the revered accomplishments and good deeds meticulously recorded in the sacred Book of Life. The departed's faith is clearly evident through the Eastern Cross atop his tomb, a hallmark of Russian Orthodox tradition. This cross boasts three distinctive bars, each representing pivotal moments in Christ's crucifixion: the top bar signifies the title board, the middle bar represents the Lord's hands nailed to the cross, and the lower bar serves as the footrest. The State Museum of City Sculptures was established in 1932 with a singular mission: to meticulously study, restore, and protect the city's rich cultural heritage, including its breathtaking gravestones. This esteemed institution is responsible for the upkeep of St Petersburg's most iconic sculptures. With several branches scattered throughout the city, the main ones are concentrated within the former Aleksandro-Nevsky Lavra territory, which was generously granted to the museum upon its founding. Tikhvinskoe Cemetery, located within the Aleksandro-Nevsky Lavra, was established in 1823 and named after the majestic Our Lady of Tikhvin Church, constructed between 1869 and 1873. In 1931, the church was closed, and two years later, the cemetery became a branch of the State Museum of City Sculptures, known as the Necropolis of Masters of Culture. This revered branch is home to numerous legendary figures from Russian culture, including renowned writers Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nikolai Karamzin, and Ivan Krylov; illustrious composers Aleksandr Borodin, Mikhail Glinka, Modest Musorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky; and celebrated artists Boris Kustodiev, Ivan Kramskoy, and Ivan Shishkin, among many other iconic names.
