Human remains are often buried and sometimes marked with stones featuring names. Rarely, an individual's life was commemorated in death by recording their name. Here are three stones that bear the names of individuals. This Roman tombstone belongs to a soldier from northeast England. His name is Nectovelius, alongside his father Vindex, tribe Brigantes, and army unit 2nd Cohort of Thracians. This inscription defines the deceased as son, tribesman, and soldier. A Christian gravestone shows identity defined by an individual's father. The name Carantus is expressed as son of Cupitianus. This stone bears an ogham inscription from a Pictish cemetery. It stood at one end of a natural long mound with graves along the way. The inscription reads NEHTETRI pr NEHTETREB - likely a personal name, but possibly also a tribal name. Symbols accompany the text, one damaged.
