This gravestone showcases a man bound to a broken column. It could signify that his life was abruptly terminated by an unfortunate occurrence. The Cimitero Monumentale is one of Milan's two largest cemeteries, the other being the Cimitero Maggiore. Its artistic tombs and monuments abound. Conceived by architect Carlo Maciachini (1818-1899), it aimed to consolidate numerous small cemeteries that were previously scattered throughout the city into a single location. Formally opened in 1866, it has since been filled with a diverse array of contemporary and classical Italian sculptures as well as Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and other original works such as a scaled-down version of Trajan's Column. Many tombs belong to prominent industrialist dynasties, designed by artists like Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Dante Parini, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Giacomo Manzù, Floriano Bodini, and Giò Pomodoro.
