This poignant sculpture captures a woman reclining, her hand beckoning to a loved one, expressing deep sorrow over the departed soul. The Cimitero Monumentale is Milan's largest cemetery, rivaling only the Cimitero Maggiore in size. This burial ground stands out for its abundance of intricately designed tombs and monuments that pay tribute to the deceased. Conceived by renowned architect Carlo Maciachini (1818–1899), this monumental complex was envisioned as a single site where numerous small cemeteries scattered throughout Milan could be consolidated. Officially unveiled in 1866, it has since become a showcase for an impressive array of modern and classical Italian sculptures, complemented by Greek temples, ornate obelisks, and original works such as a scaled replica of the Trajan's Column. Many of the elaborate tombs within this cemetery belong to prominent industrialist families, crafted by artists like Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Dante Parini, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Giacomo Manzù, Floriano Bodini, and Giò Pomodoro.
