Grave stele from Boeotia

Grave stele from Boeotia

myminifactory

This enigmatic stele, one of the earliest documented funerary monuments, was set up by Amphalkes to honor Dermys and Kitylos, as indicated in the inscription. The two deceased youths, who may have been brothers, are depicted embracing each other. On the left, Dermys stands tall, while on the right, Kitylos holds a steady pose. At the top of the stele, an originally seated Sphinx would have sat regally. This stunning work is attributed to a skilled Boeotian workshop.
