The somber figure of a nude young man is discovered in the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos, Athens. He stands to lean against a colonnette, with a chlamys draped over his left arm, and holds his head in despair. In the bottom right corner, a young servant sits on the ground, fast asleep, his head resting on his knees. The aryballos and strigil in his right hand suggest that he was once an athlete's loyal companion. At the left, the dead man's aged father looks on with sorrow etched across his face.
