Grave stele

Grave stele

This relief was unearthed in Piraeus.\r\nA mature woman clad in a chiton and himation draws up her right hand as she wears a metal wreath in her hair, evident from the holes used to secure it in place. Her body volume and garment weight were probably modelled on the statue of Eirene (Peace), a work by sculptor Kephisodotos that showcases her solemn facial expression.\r\nThe deceased woman's name is carved onto the epistyle: Melite, wife of Spoudokrates from Phyla (now known as Chalandri in Athens). This stele and others like it, including one for her son Telemachos, were erected within the family burial grounds in Piraeus' north-west cemetery, situated in the Karavas area.
