Grave stele

A magnificent grave stele carved from Pentelic marble lies submerged in the bed of the Ilissos river in Athens. A nude youth reclines against a pillar with his legs crossed, firmly grasping a lagobolon, a sturdy stick used for hunting hares, in his left hand. The presence of a dog sniffing intently at the ground behind him further emphasizes the youth's profession as a skilled hunter. On the right side of the relief, the aged father of the deceased gazes longingly at his son, overcome with grief and supported by his staff. Small holes near the hairline of both figures indicate that metal wreaths were once attached to their heads. The figure of the young man, rendered in monumental grandeur, dominates the space, suggesting that it may have been inspired by a free-standing statue of a hero. This remarkable monument, originally fashioned as a naiskos, is attributed to the renowned Parian sculptor or his apprentice. Dating back to around 340 BC, this exquisite artifact remains an outstanding example of ancient Greek artistry. It has been incorporated into "Scan The World," a non-profit initiative spearheaded by MyMiniFactory. This project aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from across the globe, freely accessible to the public. The Scan The World initiative is an open-source community effort, and anyone interested in contributing unique items can email stw@myminifactory.com to learn how they can participate and help preserve cultural heritage for future generations.
