Grave stele
myminifactory
This relief was discovered in the western outskirts of Athens, within the ancient burial ground of Kerameikos. An Athenian matron seated on a chair with footrest gazes intently at a piece of jewelry held aloft in her raised right hand, originally rendered in vivid paint. Directly opposite her, a somber standing attendant holds an open jewelry box on her mistress' lap. According to the inscription etched into the epistyle, the deceased is Hegeso, daughter of Proxenos. Her commanding presence combined with the grandeur of the family mausoleum to which this stele belongs serves as clear evidence of her noble lineage.
