Found in the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos, Athens, a woman stands proudly frontally, her chiton and himation draped elegantly around her body and arms, the fabric likely extending to cover her head as well. This stunning relief once adorned a large, imposing funerary naiskos, paying tribute to the deceased. The inspiration for this noble figure is believed to have been drawn from a renowned statue of a goddess, possibly Demeter, skillfully crafted by a master sculptor. The Large Herculaneum Woman type, characterized by its grand scale and dignified presence, appears in other funerary statues as well, testifying to the enduring influence of this iconic model.
