This stunning grave relief was unearthed at Rhamnous, a treasure trove in Attica.\r\nA robust, bearded man, leaning on his sturdy staff, extends a firm handshake with a youthful woman, their bond now unbreakable even in death. The resplendent beauty of the woman, with her refined features, lithe figure and poised stance echoes masterpieces by Praxiteles. This relief originates from a naiskos within the funerary enclosure of Hierokles. The pedimental crowning of the naiskos, inscribed with the names of the deceased, Hieron son of Hierokles, of Rhamnous and Lysippe, remains at Rhamnous.\r\nThe base of the naiskos bears an epigram paying tribute to Hieron and his four brothers who met their untimely demise before him.
