Grave of an Infant

Grave of an Infant

myminifactory

Ancient monument honors Sextus Rufius Achilleus, infant who passed away after just 7 months and 9 days. Depicted as Hermes, god of the underworld, young Achilleus wears only a brief cloak and petasus, his winged hat, while grasping a caduceus with one hand and a sack with the other. Both symbols signify Hermes' protection over commerce. At his feet lie a rooster and turtle, additional reminders of the god's presence. No artist is credited for this work, which currently resides in the Kircherian Museum. Dated to the 2nd century AD.
