Grave marker

Grave marker in the shape of an oil bottle stands tall. This monument takes the form of a lekythos, but its foot and narrow neck are now absent. The decoration depicts an older man shaking hands with a younger man wearing a broad-brimmed hat, accompanied by a horse, a small slave, and two dogs. Typically, scenes like this appear on grave reliefs, showing an old father bidding farewell to a deceased adolescent son. However, in this instance, it's possible that the older man who has passed away is being honored, as the inscription naming Hegemon of the Epikephisian dème is carved above his head. Crafted in Attica, Greece, approximately 400-375 BC, this piece is made from Pentelic marble. It was gifted by Spencer Smith and now bears the catalog number GR 20,1865.
