Grave marker

This ancient stone monument displays two ornate oil vessels, their ceramic counterparts prominently featured in Case 4. These pottery urns were designed to hold fragrant oils and frequently left at grave sites as a gesture of remembrance. In this instance, the stele cleverly converts the delicate clay vases into sturdy stone, making it a more enduring tribute. Originally, the relief patterns on these vessels were painted, and subtle remnants of their design still linger on the surface. Crafted in Attica, Greece, circa 425-350 BC, from Pentelic marble, this artifact is now part of the Trinity College collection at Cambridge University's Loan Ant 18.
