Grass Man
thingiverse
Human: The goal was to create a 3D printed, silly green 'minion'-like figure covered in grass particles commonly used for miniature train set landscapes. 3D modeling is involved in this process. A 3D model was designed using simple shapes and later edited with the eyes, teeth, and tongue added by 'boolean-cutting' them from the body. The 3D printing technique provides an ideal finish as it conceals rough layer thicknesses and ugly prints. A nice aspect of the method is its ability to mask imperfections! To achieve a green turf surface finish, I employed multiple layers of Woodland Scenics scenic cement. This was topped off with grass particles (the specific product used is by Woodland Scenics but can be mixed for custom looks). The process consists of repeatedly spraying the model, covering it with particles, and then shaking off any loose ones until satisfied. Finishing with a strong spray of the cement enhances durability. It's worth noting that grass particles might not adhere well to 3D prints, which may necessitate different glue types or priming/sanding for better results. If you've experience with this material, please share your ideas! Once complete, cement makes the surface more durable, allowing it to withstand handling. With the surface treatment done, colored teeth, eyes, and tongue were attached using a strong adhesive. And there you have it! I'm curious to see if others can incorporate this figure into an inspiring project. Let me know your thoughts on the idea!
