Degas created at least seven wax models of dancers in various positions of the arabesque, including three versions of 'arabesque penchée', a pose that involves leaning. He utilized these sculptures as a compositional tool for his oil paintings of ballet dancers. The original wax model for this sculpture was cast by Hébrard, the founder, after Degas's passing, in an edition of twenty-two pieces.
