These breathtakingly crafted portraits of father (1993.332.1) and son are undoubtedly the most exquisite examples of the portrait style of G. B. Foggini, the renowned sculptor of the Florentine Baroque. The powerful echoes of Bernini confirm that the creation of this pair dates back to shortly after the younger artist's triumphant return from Rome, yet they already showcase Foggini's remarkable ability to depict lavish opulence, which earned him the prestigious position of Medici court sculptor. Vivid contrasts abound: the delicate lace cravats and sumptuous mantles (mirroring the styles of the contemporary French court) dramatically set off the realistically rendered faces. They in turn offer a captivating study in contrasts: the commanding pose and classic Habsburg features of the balding father serve as a striking counterpoint to the sweet, somewhat unformed face of the youth, overwhelmed by a dazzling cascade of curls. Foggini's artistic mastery marked the final flourish of Medici patronage. These portraits, modeled from life, were followed by a series portraying other family members, all designed to promote the political ambitions of the declining dynasty. Their acquisition served to connect our major collection of Roman Baroque portrait busts to a rapidly growing assemblage of stunning small-scale Florentine sculptures of that period.
