Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, known as "Maria Pavlovna the Younger," was born on 18 April [O.S. 6 April] 1890 in St. Petersburg. A grand daughter of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, she had a complicated family history. Her mother's death and her father's banishment from Russia after marrying a commoner in 1902 left an indelible mark on Maria Pavlovna's early life. Raising her younger brother Dmitri, to whom she remained very close throughout her life, was Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, along with their paternal uncle Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich.
