Grand Central Terminal is a major transportation hub located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It serves as the central terminal for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad commuter railroads, as well as being a major stop on the Amtrak intercity railroad system. The terminal building itself was completed in 1913 at a cost of $60 million, making it one of the most expensive buildings constructed in the United States at that time. It was designed by architects Reed and Stem, with the assistance of Warren & Wetmore. The building is an example of early 20th-century Beaux-Arts architecture. A notable feature of Grand Central Terminal is its large main concourse, which is a high-ceilinged, barrel-vaulted space that features a massive astronomical ceiling painted by French artist Paul Cézanne's friend, French-American artist Paul Helleu. The ceiling depicts the night sky at midnight in December, with some 2,500 stars visible. Grand Central Terminal is one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States, with over 750,000 people passing through its doors each day. It is also a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors annually due to its unique architecture and rich history. The terminal has undergone several renovations since its construction, including a major restoration project completed in 1998 that restored much of the building's original grandeur. Today, Grand Central Terminal remains a vital part of New York City's transportation infrastructure and a beloved landmark for locals and tourists alike.
