A rotary table is a precision tool in metalworking that enables drilling or cutting work at exact intervals around a fixed axis. Some models allow the use of index plates and dividing plates for regular positioning. Rotary tables are typically mounted flat with the table rotating around a vertical axis, but can also be used on their end with a tailstock for workpieces between centers. This coaxial setup allows for concentric machining operations like drilling equidistant holes or face milling circular shapes. A rotary table has various uses such as cutting complex curves, straight lines at any angle, and arcs. With the addition of a compound table, the center of rotation can be moved anywhere on the part being cut. It also allows for making parts that would otherwise require a lathe with a CNC milling machine and tailstock.
