The Darrieus-inspired Gorlov helical turbine boasts a series of innovative improvements, chief among them being its distinctive helical blades/foils. First patented on September 19, 1995, and granted further protection in patents through to July 3, 2001, the GHT made waves by winning the coveted ASME Thomas A. Edison Patent Award in the year 2001. Credit for this groundbreaking design goes to Northeastern University Professor Alexander M. Gorlov, a visionary inventor. While working on the same fundamental physical principles as its iconic precursor, the Darrieus turbine, the Gorlov helical turbine is actually part of a wider family of Vertical axis wind turbines that includes Turby, Quietrevolution and Urban Green Energy machines.
