This mandible is from a male gorilla named Samson who was captured in the wild during the early 1960s and initially housed at the Buffalo Zoo. In 1980, he was temporarily relocated to Chicago's Brookfield Zoo for breeding purposes. A stroke had weakened his body before he was humanely euthanized in the spring of 1988. An autopsy later revealed a large tumor growing inside him. Two of Samson's five offspring are still living today. Kwizera, a female, is currently residing at the Memphis Zoo and was born just prior to her father's death on March 11, 1988. Kwisha, a male, was born on April 28, 1988 in the Toledo Zoo after his father had passed away. We owe thanks to Dr. Robert Feranec of the New York State Museum for providing this information. The skull was scanned using a Go!Scan 50 on March 7, 2019. This specimen is cataloged as ZM 3922 and is courtesy of the New York State Museum.
