The western lowland gorilla, a subspecies of the eastern and central African species, was first described by Savage and Wyman in 1847 as Gorilla gorilla gorilla. The Western Lowland Gorilla is found in the western regions of Africa, where it inhabits forests and grasslands. Museum registration number MZB 2010-1163 denotes a vertebral column from T6. This particular specimen belongs to an adult female western lowland gorilla that was nine years old and eight months pregnant at the time of her death. The zoo in Barcelona, Spain served as the location where this western lowland gorilla spent the last years of her life.
