Gorilla Femur (VCU_3D_4321)
sketchfab
This femur is from Samson, a male gorilla captured in the wild in the early 1960s and originally housed at Buffalo's zoo. In 1980, he was loaned to Brookfield Zoo in Chicago for breeding purposes. He suffered a stroke and was euthanized in spring of 1988. The autopsy revealed that Samson had developed a significant tumor. Five offspring from Samson are still alive today. Kwizera, a female gorilla, is currently living at the Memphis Zoo and was born just before Samson's death on March 11, 1988. Kwisha, a male gorilla, was born April 28, 1988, in Toledo's zoo after Samson's passing. Thanks to Dr. Robert Feranec of New York State Museum for providing this information. The skull was scanned with a Go!Scan 50 on March 7, 2019. This specimen is cataloged as ZM 3922 and courtesy of the New York State Museum.
