In the early 18th century, Robert Walpole transformed the site into a magnificent estate, incorporating his gardens and numerous buildings aligned with its use. Archaeologists believe these vaults were constructed between 1715 and 1745 during Walpole's ownership of the property. The defining features of this era are undoubtedly those associated with Walpole's development of the site in the 18th century. The initial phase consisted of a wall running along the northern edge, establishing the foundation for what was to come. Next, three large vaults were built, extending northward from the open façade into the terrace and a substantial vault that spanned east-west along the northern end of the north-south vaults. Beneath these vaults lay a series of small culverts, whose exact purpose remains uncertain; however, evidence suggests it may have been linked to water management systems.
