Use case

I keep my GoPro Hero8 in the tank bag of my motorbike to have it available if some cool scenery appears in front of me. In that case I stop to mount the camera to my helmet, which I need a thumb screw for of course. To keep the screw stored together with the camera is risky, as it might scratch the front lens or the display of the camera. To avoid that, I have made this anti-scratch protector for the screw.

Design

The design is actually less trivial than it looks like.

The simpler design features a carefully designed cone inside, so the screw can be “screwed” into the hole slightly to keep the protector fixed on the screw.

Update 01.07.22: There is now a more sophisticated design, that features a printed M5 thread on the last 8mm of the cap. This allows to securely screw on the cap to the thumb screw.

Printing

I have tested this part in PLA, but it should work even better from PETG, thanks to the flexibility of PETG. I strongly recommend to print two or three parts together, to give the current layer a bit more time to cool down before the next layer is applied. That helps a lot to get a nice vertical surface both on the inside and the outside of the part.
