GoPro Low Profile Magnetic Mount -w- Rearview Mirror Base

thingiverse

Here is a simple, low-profile mount for a GoPro. At only .125 inches thick, it extends no more than the latch. It mates with an angled base that I glued to the back of my car's rearview mirror for a simple drive cam setup. I've included the Fusion 360 file to allow for easy modification of either component. This mount can be used flexibly, such as mounting to a ferrous magnetic surface or another base design with similar magnets. When used with matching magnets, the holding power should be high. I used .5 inch ring magnets from MagCraft (https://www.magcraft.com/ring-magnets). Any round magnet measuring .5 inches x .125 inches will work. The ring magnets in the pictures were ones that I already had. Even better would be disk magnets at .5 inches x .125 inches (https://www.magcraft.com/disc-magnets). The round hole in the middle is for a locator pin on the base. This pin is not absolutely necessary for attaching as the magnets on the base will positively locate to those on the mount, but it helps when separating the pieces. Rotate the camera on this pin to break the magnetic bond, and it falls away easily. See the last picture for the critical dimensions if designing different bases for this mount. Depending on your printer and settings, you will probably need to print a few until you get the size of the magnet holes just right. I needed to oversize holes by .01 inches for a snug fit with my printer setup, but I suspect that will vary a bit.
