Gollum emerges from J.R.R. Tolkien's vast legendarium as a complex fictional character. First appearing in the 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, designed for children, Gollum quickly evolves into a pivotal supporting figure in its sequel, The Lord of the Rings. Initially known as Sméagol, this Stoor Hobbit from the River-folk dwelled near the Gladden Fields. His life took a dark turn after being consumed by the corrupting influence of the One Ring; later, he would be forever known as Gollum due to his distinctive habit of making an unsettling gulping noise in his throat.
