The Golden Hind was a ship renowned for its remarkable global circumnavigation, which took place between 1577 and 1580 under the fearless leadership of Sir Francis Drake. Originally christened the Pelican, the vessel was renamed mid-voyage in 1577 by Drake as he prepared to navigate the treacherous Straits of Magellan. He dubbed the ship the Golden Hind as a thoughtful tribute to his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose armorial crest featured a majestic golden hind.
