A Brief History San Franciscoâs Golden Gate bridge is an iconic suspension bridge spanning the San Francisco Bay from the northern most point of the city to Marin County. Although it is only the 14th longest suspension bridge in the world, it is the 2nd longest in the United States after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City. It is possibly Californiaâs most recognisable landmark and certainly one of the most photographed. The initial concept of a bridge spanning the 2.7km across the bay was proposed in an article in a local paper in 1916. The project was widely considered to be impossible as it was deemed to be too difficult and too expensive. However, the article was enough to start a long conversation between renowned engineers of the day, and eventually a plan was developed. Construction began on 5th January 1933 with McClintic-Marshall Construction Company in charge and a budget of over $36 million ($511 million in todayâs money). More than four years later, with 11 men falling to their deaths during the building process, the bridge was finally completed on 19th April 1937, ahead of schedule and $1.3 million under budget. Facts and Figures Opened on 27th of May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was celebrated by a week-long festival. Spanning an impressive 2737.4m and at a height of 227.4m, the bridgeâs 27.4m width carries highway 101 with 6 lanes of traffic, a walkway for pedestrians and a bicycle lane. There is an upper clearance of 4.3m for traffic (too low for trucks which have to use the neighbouring Bay Bridge) and 267.1m for boats in and out of the bay at high tide. The volume of traffic crossing is approximately 110,000 vehicles per day with many thousands of cyclists, runners and walkers also using the span for recreation and photo opportunities.
