Golden Egg - Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (functional)
thingiverse
I needed a prop for a Harry Potter style play, the thing by RyanJWilson1995 looked great, but also looked like it was never actually printed. Upon further inspection, it was also very small and we needed something that resembled the actual golden egg from the movie. So, I scaled it up about 1000% (actually 1083.25%) and started trying to print. The first problems were orientation, the models were not printable the way they were oriented, so I fixed that. Then, it looked like the egg shell had no where to attach to the inner egg, so I designed a base with hinges and connected the shell parts to that. I was able to get all of the shell parts with the base and hinges to print in place with the help of a little connector that helps keep the shell parts in place, they just need to be snipped away after printing. It's a long print, a little over 24 hours for the two main parts each, then a few hours for the top. Your mileage may vary, as you might be able to print faster or slower than I can. It also took a lot of filament, about half a spool, but still cheap for a nice prop, that actually opens.
