Legend has it that generations ago, the city of Ninpur was besieged by a horde of orcs that came upon them from the North while Ninpur’s army was away on campaign. With only a small force of defenders left behind, it seemed the city was doomed to fall. The citizens cried out as one to Inanna for aid, and she responded by sending the spirit of the Bull of Heaven to inhabit the great statues that guard the city gate, which stepped down from their plinths and laid waste to the orcs. When the Lugal of Konar heard of this miracle, he immediately commissioned the construction of a mechanical bull of gold and bronze and had bound to it an animating spirit of air and fire, unwilling to allow his city to be outshone by its rival Ninpur. Some said that this was an affront to the gods, and perhaps that is why the Lugal was struck down by an incurable wasting sickness less than a year later. But for whatever reason, the Mechanical Bull itself was spared, and it has stood guard in the city of Konar ever since.
