A ring is a round band, typically made of metal, worn as an ornamental accessory. Rings come in different types and materials such as wood, stone, glass, gemstone, plastic, and can be adorned with gemstones like diamond, ruby, sapphire, or emerald. They're not only worn for aesthetics but also hold symbolic meanings in various aspects of life including marriage, achievements, status, authority, organization membership, and more. Rings can even have insignias or concealed compartments. The history of rings dates back to 2500 BC with finger rings discovered in Ur tombs. Hittite civilization produced rings, Egyptians crafted various designs from metal and faience, while Greek and Roman styles influenced native ones during the Ptolemaic dynasty. Archaic Greek rings were less substantial than Egyptian ones and primarily made of silver and bronze. The classical period saw a shift towards silver and gold, with lozenge bezel mountings as common designs. During the early imperial era, typical Roman rings had a thick hoop tapering into a slightly wider bezel with an embedded oval gem. Intricate designs became popular in the third and fourth centuries AD, leading to the use of multiple rings on each hand and finger. Gems gained prominence after 1150 as they were believed to provide protective powers. Engraved rings featured Lombardic script until replaced by Gothic script around 1350. Wedding rings are traditionally worn on the fourth digit of the left hand, a custom linked to the belief that the 'vena amoris' or vein of love connects this finger directly to the heart. This belief was known in 16th and 17th century England and can be traced back to ancient Rome. Rings have been re-purposed over time, sometimes hung from bracelets or necklaces. Different countries use traditional sizing systems for rings in addition to the ISO standard that measures size by inner circumference in millimeters.
