Panning for gold requires a combination of skill and patience. The device at hand is specifically designed for this purpose, with the ability to pan and/or highlight the presence of heavy minerals. Its modest dimensions make it ideal for collecting samples in various environments. The parallel edges of the device create less disturbance in the wash than smaller, round-shaped pans, which are better suited for detecting very small gold dots. These tiny specks may be lighter in weight, but their density is identical to that of larger pieces. However, the design lacks a sloping smooth side for recovering the wash product by tilting it at the end. To compensate for this, users can employ a small jet of water or a handheld spray bottle filled with water to rinse the gold particles and collect them in the center. A brush or pipette can then be used to gather the washed product. Alternatively, the device can be submerged in plenty of water over another basin designed to capture the wash product. This approach is more suited for quiet environments where basins of water are readily available, rather than in fast-moving rivers.
