
GnomIoT - The Solar Powered Garden Sensor

Monitor your garden with this IoT powered Garden Gnome! Sensors include Outdoor Temperature, Humidity, Soil Moisture, Swimming Pool Temperature and Water Level. Powered by a LiPo Battery and Solar Panel, this gadget also features Wifi and Cloud enabled online/mobile dashboard at https://freeboard.io/board/7XJ6_T. To build this project you will need: 1. Particle Photon WiFi controller 2. LiPo Rider Solar Battery Charger 3. Solar Panel 4. Waterproof Temperature Sensor, DHT11 Sensor and Soil Moisture 5. Breadoard + Various Resistances (Average cost: ~60$) Assemble the circuit following the pictures below, then secure all parts on the breadboard with duct tape and insert it in the gnome. Pass cables for sensors through the rear hole covered by a small cover to prevent water from entering. All junctures of the gnome model are embossed to keep out water and humidity. Best printed in Laybrick or Wood filaments, this design can also be painted with acrylic for added impermeability. To use this project you will need to load the code into your Particle Build IDE (PARTICLE-LOOP, ONEWIRE and HTTPCLIENT libraries required). Change the Dweet name at the start of the script to a name of your choice. Then open the Freeboard dashboard, clone it with the Clone button at the bottom, and change the Datasource on the top right panel to match your dweet name. Print Settings: Rafts - No, Supports - No, Resolution - 0.3, Infill - 20%. Note that this design is best printed using temperature resistant materials like ABS, Laybrick or Wood. For a simplified version of this project you will need: 1. Particle Photon Board 2. LiPo Rider Solar Battery Charger 3. Temperature Sensor 4. Five 10k Ohm Resistances 5. Breadboard For an advanced version of the project you will also require: 1. DHT11 Temp/Humidty Sensor 2. Soil Humidity Sensor 3. Extra 10k Resistance This design is based on the Makerbot Gnome model and requires minimal modifications to work as a fully functional IoT garden monitor.
