Globe model with stand and orbiting Moon

This is an Earth model complete with stand and an orbiting Moon, crafted to perfection. The Earth boasts a diameter of 100 mm, while the Moon measures in at 27 mm, roughly 27% the size of its terrestrial counterpart. Both models feature a 3 mm diameter hole through their centers, accommodating a sturdy 3 mm steel rod that holds them together. The stand expertly positions the Earth model at a precise 23.5 degree tilt, while the Moon is situated in close proximity to its celestial companion. To achieve an accurate scale distance between the two, the arm would need to stretch approximately 3 meters long. To bring these models to life, I employed Slic3r Prusa Edition's stock PLA settings and printed them in PLA without any supports. The Earth model showcases lines that mark its equator, tropics, Arctic and Antarctic circles, and latitudes, adding an extra layer of detail to the design. To facilitate alignment, the Earth features an insert coupling and alignment pegs, although these can be omitted if you possess exceptional alignment skills. The Moon, on the other hand, relies solely on manual alignment. Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that the arm supporting the Moon is somewhat flimsy. To address this issue, I recommend utilizing a dense infill, such as 50% or more, to provide added stability. In the future, I plan to redesign the entire setup, possibly incorporating a foot at the end of the arm to maintain its straight and level position. To achieve a smooth finish on both models, I employed sandpaper to eliminate any rough edges, followed by a filler primer to prepare them for painting. Using 400 grit sandpaper, I wet sanded the surfaces before applying an additional layer of 800 grit sandpaper for added smoothness. With my favorite light blue spray paint, I gave the Earth a vibrant coat, while hand-painted land masses emerged with acrylic paints and stencils. The Moon received a simple yet elegant treatment using white and gray acrylic paint.
