Glimmingehus Borg och vallgrav
sketchfab
Glimmingehus, situated in the Simrishamn Municipality of Scania, southern Sweden, boasts the most preserved medieval stronghold in Scandinavia. Constructed between 1499 and 1506, this era coincided with Scania being a crucial part of Denmark, resulting in defensive arrangements characteristic of the time, such as parapets, false doors, and dead-end corridors. The presence of "murder-holes" for pouring scorching pitch over attackers, moats, drawbridges, and other forms of deadly traps aimed to surprise trespassers and protect nobles from peasant uprisings is also notable. The lower section of the castle's stone walls stands at 2.4 meters thick, while the upper part measures 1.8 meters in thickness.[1] Construction began in 1499 under Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand, with North German master Adam van Düren overseeing the project as a skilled stone-cutter-mason and architect who also worked on Lund Cathedral. The construction was completed in 1506.
