Glimmingehus, situated in the Simrishamn Municipality of Scania, southern Sweden, stands out as Scandinavia's most well-preserved medieval fortress. Constructed between 1499 and 1506, this strategic stronghold was built during a time when Denmark controlled Scania. The defensive structures include high parapets, fake doors, and dead-end corridors designed to trap intruders, 'murder-holes' for pouring scalding pitch on attackers, moats, drawbridges, and other cunning traps to deter trespassers and protect nobles from peasant uprisings. The lower sections of the castle's stone walls measure 2.4 meters in thickness, while the upper sections are a sturdy 1.8 meters thick. The construction process began in 1499 under Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand's direction, with expert stonemason Adam van Düren, a North German master who also contributed to Lund Cathedral, overseeing the project. The fortification was completed by 1506.
