I'm currently at 50% plastic with the rest being a mixture of JB weld, epoxy, shapelock, superglue, and shrink tubing. Breaking the original hinges has become a common occurrence, making it uneconomical to replace them often. I've developed an interest in printing new glasses frames repeatedly, especially now that I have a CAD model allowing me to add space for wires and surface mount components. The design also gives me room to modify dimensions, which helped prevent my current frames from falling off my head due to their short arms. To create the model, I taped my current frames to my screen at a 1:1 ratio and carefully drew a spline of the lens perimeter dimension using calipers and dots. Other splines were done visually to suit my taste, as long as the lens dimensions are accurate, the rest can be any shape. I haven't printed these yet, but when I do, here's what I plan: Using a hot air reflow station to heat up the nose bridge and lens areas, then bending them to match the curvature of my current frames by holding them parallel. The design is slightly smaller than real life to account for geometric stretching. To ensure your lenses fit perfectly, print at a 1:1 scale, cut out the interior, insert the pieces into your current frames, and adjust accordingly. If your first pair doesn't meet expectations, measure the improper dimensions, update your model, and reprint. I've included CAD files so you can modify the lens holes for your own lenses if you like the frame design. The hinges require 3mm pins; I plan to use filament with flattened ends if printing a good pin isn't feasible.
